5K Run

Feb 27, 2010

5K Run

On Saturday, May 1, 2010, Huron Hills Church will host its 7th Annual Endurance 5K Run and Walk at Gallup Park.  As you may know, the Endurance 5K is not only an invigorating run at a gorgeous park, but an event to raise money for an Ann Arbor individual in need.  This past year, thanks to our runners, sponsors and donors, we were successful in raising more than $4000 for the medical needs of Nick Breakey, a Huron High School student battling leukemia.   The recipient of this year’s race may be familiar to you.  Luisa Ponvert is an 8 year-old Bach Elementary School student, who is suffering a brain injury after contracting encephalitis in early 2008.  Her mother, Adele Ponvert, was a local artist and was well-known throughout the Farmer’s Market and Ann Arbor Artist Communities.  In November, 2009, Adele lost her battle with cancer after a long and exhausting 6 years.  Luisa is now being cared for by her mother’s best friend, Chris Herdell.  While we cannot relieve all of the burdens Luisa and Chris face, we are hopeful that with your help, we can offer just a little financial comfort at this time.

Join us February 6th from 12-2 at the Lodge for light luncheon.  After lunch we will have a guest speaker for a discussion on “Change Your Diet, Change Your Life.” Girlfriends, good health is possible!  Food is a dilemma for many - what to eat, or not eat - when pursuing good health.  Join us as Carol Springer, RD, shares with us current information about food choices for good health.  Some of the topics to be discussed are:  Having a right relationship with food; challenges of the typical American diet; food and the treatment of illness; and tips for weight management.  Leave this session with tools to help you make better choices for better health. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions.

After the luncheon drop by the “Chik – Bag” table and see what the widows of Zambia are doing with trash bags to earn money to buy food and clothing for their children. Start saving your colored plastic shopping bags and bring them to the lunch to help these widows.

World Vision Case Study

Oct 6, 2009

Jesus’ ministry was to go directly to those in need, to give them freedom, release and recovery.  Then he took his disciples and for the next few years they did the same thing.  Jesus modeled the gospel action that he calls his disciples to engage in:  direct, active, feet and hands on the ground, touching  the most despised and needy people.  As he called his disciples, so he calls us, 21st century Christians, facing a world in desperate need.

Since 2004 Huron Hills has engaged in direct, active, feet and hands-on-the-ground ministry through the generosity of World Vision USA and World Vision Mexico.  We have sent seven missions groups of people and numerous other smaller groups to interact and minister alongside our brothers and sisters on the North Border in Tijuana, Mexico.  Not only have we been changed by this, but we have also encouraged our co-workers in marginalized communities, raised awareness in our church and community, and raised resources and funds for the ongoing work.

Direct involvement is the only way to truly change people for a lifetime.  It is our involvement, directly, as a local church, with hands and feet on the ground and getting dirty, that has catalyzed generosity, unleashed servants desiring to help those caught in the grip of poverty, and opened pocketbooks for the poor.  If this model of service is replicated among local churches it is our belief that you will unleash a generosity mindset unlike one the church has ever seen.  In so doing you will unleash resources for the poor and the church will be revolutionized.

Count Your Jellybeans...and Your Blessings!

Apr 10, 2009

The Children at HHBC did both!  Many sized up the contents of a large jar filled with jelly beans and submitted their guesses.  On Palm Sunday, it was revealed that there were 1240 jelly beans in the jar.  The winner, Mason Monroe, estimated that there were 1235!  His reward?  Take home the entire jar.  That's a whole lot of jelly beans. But God gives us even more blessings than Mason has jelly beans.  We have more blessings than we can count!  Start counting!  1, 2, 3...

Goats for Africa

Nov 13, 2008

Gus the Goat Kids MinistryGus the Goat is looking for a home and the children of Huron Hills are helping him find that home. The Children’s Sunday School Offering for 2008-2009 will be used to purchase goats through Heifer International.  The kids learned that more children around the world rely on goat’s milk than on cow’s milk and that a Heifer goat can give a family up to a gallon of milk every day.  After sampling goat’s milk an HHBC second grader commented, “That’s not too bad.”  while a fourth grader observed that, “It kind of tastes like a goat smells.”  For every $120 collected, one goat will be bought for a family in Africa. One of our five year olds asked her mom for extra chores so that she could earn money to help buy goats.  The 5th Graders are nearing their goal to be the first class to contribute enough money to buy an entire goat!  HHBC Kids are learning to have generous hearts.
