Weekly Update Mar 23, 2017

Prayer Focus
Pray for the Children's Ministry at Huron Hills. Pray for all of the children from Nursery through High School. Pray that each one will come into a relationship with Jesus Christ and that they would grow in trust and faith. Pray for the teachers and mentors who guide and instruct them each week.

  • Isaiah 54:13
All your children will be taught by the Lord, and great will be their peace.
  • Proverbs 2:6
For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.
  • 2 Peter 3:18
But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and forevermore.
  • Matthew 19:13–14
Then people brought little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

From the Board Chair
These are the four primary characteristics identified by scholars of historic evangelicalism that we at HHC adhere to:

  • Christ: a stress on the person of Jesus Christ, his ministry and death on the cross as making possible the redemption of humanity
  • Conversion: the belief that lives need to be transformed through a “born-again” experience and a life long process of following Jesus
  • Bible: high regard for and obedience to the Bible as the ultimate authority and the primary source of all essential spiritual truth.
  • Action: the expression and demonstration of the gospel in missionary and social reform efforts

These four components afford us a lot of room to discern together where the Holy Spirit is leading our local church to be a part of the mission of Jesus.  We are asking for everyone to pray for the Lord to guide and direct us as we seek Him.

Email Prayer Group
Want to receive prayer requests from the congregation? Sign up to join our email prayer group! Weekly Update Mar 16, 2017

Prayer Focus
May the people of Huron Hills seek God and His Kingdom.

  • Matthew 6:33
But seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given you as well.
  • Hebrews 12: 1-3
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of faith. For the joy set before Him, He endured the cross, scorning it's shame and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

Weekly Update Mar 9, 2017

Prayer Focus
Pray for the strategic partners of Huron Hills (missionaries) who are taking our mission from this place to the ends of the earth. Ask the Lord to provide for their every need as they serve Him. May we see great multitudes of people come to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ through the ministries of our strategic partners.

  • Mark 16:15
Jesus said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.”
  • Matthew 28:18-20
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
  • Matthew 24:14
And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

Our Memory Verse for March comes from Colossians 3:13. “Put up with one another. Forgive one another if you are holding something against someone. Forgive, just as the Lord forgave you.” (NIrV)

March in First Look
This month, our preschoolers will be "Building" love for others and learning that they can love everyone, just as Christ loves them! Our memory verse is John 13:34 - “Love one another.”

Mid High and High School

  • We had an amazing time at SpringHill!! Parents, thank you for the prayers and be sure to ask your students about their time, what they learned, and how God moved. We definitely saw students taking steps in their faith. Some big themes were to put our security in God because nothing else is permanent, knowing that we can never be good enough but God provides us with grace, and to live for Jesus in our day-to-day lives. This sunk in for many of the students, and we are praying that God will continue this work in their lives.
  • Skating at Buhr Park. Saturday, March 18th from 11:30am–1:30pm, meet at the Lodge. Cost: $10 (skate rentals will be an additional $1). The actual skating will be from 12pm–1pm if you want to meet us at Buhr. We are renting the entire rink, so be sure to come!

Weekly Update Mar 2, 2017

Prayer Focus
Pray for Huron Hills Church to delight in discovering our many Spiritual Gifts to build up the church for the glory of God.

  • 1 Corinthians 12:4–7
  • Now, there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
  • 1 Peter 4:10–11
  • As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies, in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To Him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen

The Broken Way (Spring All Church Focus): Starts 3.4-5.2017
Grace wastes nothing. Our lives are the raw material the Spirit uses to make us who God calls us to be. We'll read Ann Voskamp's The Broken Way: a daring path into the abundant life. (This book will challenge us with its honesty to open ourselves and be vulnerable about our brokenness.) For 6 weeks, we will learn how God works in and through our brokenness to heal, redeem, and rescue us. Books, study guides and home group DVD's are now available in the lobby. Home Group leaders can pick up books and study guides and 1 DVD. Sunday messages will be coordinated with the scripture texts used in the study guide.

These teams will assist Pastor Nathan in reviewing candidates for his recommendation to the board, give prayer covering, wise counsel, and coordinating nominee/candidate visits and the arrival of new staff.

For those who were not able to make it, you can grab a packet of handouts at the Info Center in the lobby.

Thank you to all who participated in the election. Praise God for His faithfulness in providing leaders for our church, and please pray for our leadership teams during this time of transition.

Website facelift!
HuronHills.org has gotten a facelift! What's new? Clearer ways of getting around, and learning where you fit at our church. This site better conveys the many pathways through which God is moving at Huron Hills! As always, you can find information about classes, meeting times, and a link to give online. We're still in the process up finalizing and updating information, so please "pardon our dust" over the coming weeks as we work to get everything entered properly.

Shiloh
The name Shiloh means "place of peace." For women experiencing the pain of infertility or loss, nothing may be more needed than peace, rest, support, and understanding. Join us on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30pm in Room 117 on the lower level. The lower level doors will be unlocked, and you will be greeted with tea, snacks, and a place of peace.  bianca@huronhills.org

We're assembling teams of people from Huron Hills for a day of service projects at 4 different sites: Mitchell Elementary, C.A.N. Green-Baxter Court, Huron High School, and our own HH Kids entrance area. Clean up, beautification, prayer walks, collaboration and connection with Green-Baxter residents, and other improvements will communicate in practical ways a love for our city, people far from God, and help continue our practice of training in servant leadership our HH Youth Mexico Team! Snow Patrol Volunteers Needed
Your HHC Properties Ministry Team is looking for volunteers to take a weekend this winter to be responsible to remove snow from the walks around the church and the Lodge and to keep the areas near the doors clear of ice during the Sunday morning activities. This is a Saturday/Sunday AM only responsibility. We have great equipment and will train you to use it. This could perhaps be a Fellowship Group or parent/child activity. Be a part of the Snow Removal Team at Huron Hills! If you are willing to volunteer for an upcoming weekend this winter, please email Brad Davis at bzdavis1@comcast.net

From the Board Chair
We are in the midst of a search for a Youth Pastor and an Associate Pastor (responsible for managing and implementing pathways into our mission, ministry, and membership). Both positions will center on people who are far from God and helping them develop a close and living relationship with Jesus Christ. And, for those who know and trust Christ, to help them grow in faith and service. Paul writes in Romans 12 that we are to be “constant in prayer” and we need to be praying that the Lord will bring His people to Huron Hills to serve in these two roles. John Collman reminded us during the Lead Pastor search that we should call the Search Team the “Find Team” for God had someone in mind and our posture should be to pray for that person to be “found”. Let us continue to pray in faith and confidence that the Lord will direct our “search”.

Coffee Lovers!
Huron Hills is a highly caffeinated church, and serving coffee on Sunday mornings is one way we extend a welcome to all. The coffee prep team is in need of additional volunteers. To serve, contact Jane Talbot at jane.m.talbot@gmail.com.

Weekly Update Feb 23, 2017

Prayer Focus
Let's join together in prayer for our neighbors. Whether you live in an apartment, a subdivision, or on the farm, pray for those in the neighborhood where you come and go for shelter. And pray for those who are in temporary housing and are living in shelters, alleys or on the streets. How can we be good neighbors?
"Jesus, help us to love our neighbors. In this season of reflection and repentance, help us to let go of bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead help us to be kind to all people, tenderhearted, forgiving each other just as God through Christ has forgiven us. Help us as a church family to draw closer to God, Father, and Jesus our Lord, through loving each other. Holy Spirit, heal our broken relationships."    Amen
1 John 4: 7–11: Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

Annual Meeting & Chili Lunch (February 26, 12–2:30pm)
Join us this Sunday for a Chili Luncheon in Fellowship Hall and then we'll gather in the Sanctuary to elect new officers, reflect on the 2016 ministry year, hear updates from ministry areas, pray together, and look forward to the 2017 and beyond. Childcare provided!

Our theme this month is LOVE: because we are created in God’s image, we have the capacity to love. Every time we choose to treat others the way we want to be treated, we show others a glimpse into the perfect love God has for each one of us. Our memory verse is John 4:10, "Here is what love is. It is not that we loved God. It is that he loved us and sent his Son to give his life to pay for our sins."

February in First Look
This month, our preschoolers will be learning that Jesus’ love is SO BIG!  Jesus loves them with a love that is bigger than they can imagine! Our memory verse is Ephesians 3:18 - “How wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ.”

Join us on the first Wednesday of each month, beginning March 1 (after the Ash Wednesday gathering) in Room 117 on the lower level. The lower level doors will be unlocked, and you will be greeted with tea, snacks, and a place of peace.     bianca@huronhills.org

Save the date! Our annual meeting returns! Join us for a Chili Luncheon in Fellowship Hall and then we'll gather in the Sanctuary to elect new officers, reflect on the 2016 ministry year, hear updates from ministry areas, pray together, and look forward to the 2017 and beyond. Childcare provided!

Weekly Update Feb 9, 2017

Prayer Focus
Let's join together in prayer for our neighbors. Whether you live in an apartment, a subdivision, or on the farm, pray for those in the neighborhood where you come and go for shelter. And pray for those who are in temporary housing and are living in shelters, alleys or on the streets. How can we be good neighbors?

"Dear Jesus, because you love us so much, help us to love our neighbors. In this season of reflection and repentance, help us to let go of any bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead help us to be kind to all people, tenderhearted, forgiving each other just as God through Christ has forgiven us. Help us as a church family to draw closer to God, Father, and Jesus our Lord, through loving each other. Holy Spirit, heal our broken relationships." Amen

1 John 4: 7–11
Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God.

Board Connection
In preparation for the election and Annual Meeting next month, the ballot and information about each of the candidates is now available at the Info Center. You may notice that there is an extra candidate for the Board - the Nominating Committee has exercised their constitutional right to expand the Board in order to provide more hands for leadership work and increase diversity and abilities on the Board. Members, we encourage you to review the slate of candidates so you can pray and discern prior to voting at the upcoming Annual Meeting on February 26. Special thanks to the Nominating Committee for putting together the slate of candidates!

From the Board Chair
The message of the gospel is one of unbridled love that leads to repentance, forgiveness and new life. As we enter 2017, the Board’s vision for Huron Hills is a place where we seek to be Christ-centered, Conversion-oriented, Bible-centered, Action-oriented. We want to be a community of believers who are eager to share life with one another. One of the ways in which we live out our calling is in home groups. Someone said that home groups “aren’t just one more thing to do” but home groups are the thing to do! Groups are doing life together. In times of struggle, I have found my group is the place where I experience support and encouragement. I can count on them. If you are not in a group, I urge you to join one and experience life in Christ with others. Check out how to join a group at the group life table or email grouplife@huronhills.org.

Weekly Update Feb 3, 2017

Prayer Focus
Let's lift up our leaders in prayer, specifically Pastor Nathan and our church board. Give thanks for David Baldrige, Nathan Clair, Gary Court, Cathy Galura, Michael Hoffman, Carole Metzger, Dale Patterson, Sara Samuel, and Carol Springer, asking God to richly bless them as they serve the people of Huron Hills.

Pray for wisdom and understanding:

Ephesians 1: 15–17

For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.

Pray for Spiritual strength and character:

1 Timothy 6:11–12

Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

Board Connection

Thank you, Huron Hills!
Let’s give a hand to the 42 pair of hands that volunteered to serve the homeless families at Interfaith Hospitality Network this past week. Weekly Update Jan 26, 2017

Weekly Information 1/26/17

In preparation for the election and Annual Meeting next month, the ballot and information about each of the candidates is now available at the Info Center. The election consists of voting in new members to the Nominating Committee, and confirming new Board members and the Treasurer. Members, we encourage you to review the slate of candidates so you can pray and discern prior to voting at the upcoming Annual Meeting on February 26. Special thanks to the Nominating Committee for working to put together the slate of candidates!

Reaching Out to Homeless Families
Four times a year HHC serves as the host congregation at Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) at Alpha House. The mission of IHN is to provide food, shelter and comprehensive services in a caring atmosphere of dignity and safety for the homeless families of Washtenaw County. The goal is to support the families in securing and maintaining their own home.

You can extend the love of Christ to these families by volunteering to provide supplies, prepare and serve meals, participate in the children’s activity time or stay overnight. Our next host week is Monday, January 30—Friday, February 3. Join hands with others at HHC to serve those in need. Look for the sign up board in the foyer of HHC or contact Margaret Gaugler for more information at mjgaugler@gmail.com. Additional information about IHN can be found at www.alphahouse-ihn.org.

All Church Prayer Gathering! (February 16, 6–7pm)
Last year was filled with fruitful ministry, and we want the Spirit of God to move and work even more. At this time of guided prayer, we'll gather to pray for more conversions, decisions for renewal, life change here, and around the globe. Let's pray for new staffing needs, our missionaries, and for new opportunities to reach people who are far from God. Let's pray for our neighbors, friends and co-workers who need Jesus!

Annual Meeting & Chili Lunch (February 26, 12–2:30pm)
Save the date! Our annual meeting returns! Join us for a Chili Luncheon in Fellowship Hall and then we'll gather in the Sanctuary to elect new officers, reflect on the 2016 ministry year, hear updates from ministry areas, pray together, and look forward to the 2017 and beyond. Childcare provided!

Sincerely, The Gary & Myra Court Family

Opportunities to Help Refugees
The link http://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090e48aea92ba0fe3-inkind48 will take you to a site which lists the latest practical/tangible needs for refugees in our area. Currently there are needs for laptop computers; children's sleeping bags and electric blankets. If you are able to provide item(s), just enter your information into the web site, and you will be contacted for arrangements to be made for pick-up.

Washtenaw Refugee Welcome is asking partner congregations to help generate a list of employers in Washtenaw county who are willing to consider hiring refugees. "The refugees we are trying to help all speak English, have professional experience, are computer literate—some are highly skilled, all have at least some college education (including one MBA), and are willing and eager to work. Transportation is the greatest obstacle. Full- and part-time positions are welcome."

If you know any potential employers to add to the list, please send an email to Cathy Galura cgalura@umich.edu.

Consider working with Samaritas to foster unaccompanied refugee minors—most are 16–17 years old and come from Africa, Central America and the Middle East. Mentor and tutors are also needed for young adults.

Intro & info meeting Saturday, January 28, 10am–1pm at Zion Lutheran. Click here to enroll: http://www.washtenawrefugeewelcome.org/traaining/

Weekly Update, 12.1.14

Dear Huron Hills,

ADVENT is here, and we are invited to make room for God, to get outside our limited point of view, and believe again that Jesus can make us new. It's so much bigger than a warm up for Christmas! So don't miss out on great devotional resources for the season. Check out the GroupLife table in the lobby! _____________________________________

GET READY FOR SUNDAY!

1. Read the Assigned Texts for Advent (Week 2)
These texts are short excerpts that share themes, and show us the arc of God's story in Holy Scripture.

2. The Old Testament texts show us God's vision for a world restored, healed and saved. They speak of our own deep yearning for renewal and rescue. Where do you need to see God work and redeem in your life?
Ask God to bring the life of "heaven" into your life on earth. Name your needs, own them before your heavenly Father. He loves you.

3. The Gospel text from Matthew confronts us. John the Baptist demands we admit where we are part of the brokenness. It's not just outside us, or happening to us. We are being hurt, and we hurt others.
Repentance is a total change of mind that reorders how you live your life. How can you cultivate "the fruit of repentance"? How can you cooperate with God as he works in you?

4. The New Testament letter of Romans invites us to hope. God gives us endurance and encourages us to continue to live for him even as we wait to see "the kingdom of heaven". In fact, that kingdom shows up whenever we live for him. Paul connects the mindset of Jesus to the acceptance of Jesus. How can you share hope and healing with others as you accept them? Who do you need to forgive, and welcome back into your life? Who has God put in your life who is hurting and is desperate to experience the radical acceptance of God?

5. End with this prayer:

Laboring God,
with axe and winnowing fork
you clear a holy space
where hurt and destruction have no place,
and a little child holds sway.
Clear our lives of hatred and despair,
sow seeds of joy and peace,
that shoots of hope may spring forth
and we may live in harmony
with one another. Amen.

Giving Trees 2016 (Nov. 27–Jan. 1)
Our World Vision Giving Trees are back!

Give gifts from the World Vision catalog and give the gift of hope, love and compassion. You can also become a monthly "Refugee Responder" and continue to support their work in Syria!

Christmas Eve (2 gatherings) & Christmas Day (no gatherings)
Christmas Eve has two gathering times again! 5:30 and 7. Both gatherings will be filled with carol singing, the story of Christmas, and lighting candles as we sing Silent Night. The 5:30pm gathering will feature HH Kids singing. Christmas Day we will NOT hold any gatherings. We're encouraging the people of Huron Hills to slow down and really connect with their families. A simple guide for home worship will be provided.
