‘That’s in the Bible?!’: Cosmic Face-Off and a Quiet Whisper (May 15)
Main Point: God will hold us up In the midst of opposition and difficulties
Scripture: 1 Kings 18 & 19
Have you ever asked the question, ‘Where is God?’ It seems like every time we turn on the news, another shooting has happened, hate crimes are on the rise, another natural disaster strikes. The brokenness of this world can also hit close to home as we face broken relationships, problems at work, illnesses of our loved ones. All this can leave us wondering, ‘Where is God? Why does it seem like He is silent? Does He care?’
These are questions a follower of God would be asking in ancient Israel in during the middle of the 9th century BC. Ahab was King, the worship of Baal had more or less become the state-sanctioned religion, and Queen Jezebel was hunting down God’s prophets to kill them. God calls Elijah to take a stand, and what ensues is a cosmic face-off between Elijah and 450 prophets of Baal. Through this process, and an unexpected turn in the story, God reveals a fundamental aspect of His character and love: That He will hold us up in the midst of opposition and difficulties.

2) Have you ever asked the question, “Where is God?!” What was going on that lead you to ask this question?
3) What kind of ‘opposition’ do you feel like you are you currently facing? (ex. School, stress, friend drama, an illness, etc.)
4) Read Psalm 46:1-3. What do these verses mean for us in our everyday life? Do you believe what these verses are saying are actually true?
5) What are some ways that God reminds us that He is there?
