All Ages Free Tailgate Party (September 23, Lot Opens 1pm, Game 4pm)
It's a laid back Tailgate Party for all ages! Michigan vs. Purdue! Invite your friends to come to the HH parking lot, bring a grill and/or picnic foods, some lawn chairs and let's have a great time together! There will be a petting zoo, pony rides, face-painting, bouncies, and sidewalk chalk for the kids. We'll watch the game on a 9x12 screen! A free drawing for prizes will roll out at half-time. You don't have to be a football fan! This is an awesome way for us to continue to grow in love and outreach together!

Help Welcome New Attenders to the HHC Family with Hospitality!
Would you like to help extend the 'welcome mat' to new attenders at Huron Hills Church? Do you enjoy hosting people for meals at your home? If you are an HHC member/regular attender who would like to be on an e-mail list/rotation that could allow you to connect occasionally with a new attender to invite to your home for a meal, we'd love to hear from you. E-mail Community Life Director Kurt Heinold at kurt@huronhills.org.

Community Life Director
Our new Community Life Director, Kurt Heinold, is excited to meet with you, get to know you, and hear any ideas you have for community life and connections at Huron Hills. He would love to hear from you and set up a get-together at kurt@huronhills.org

Adopt-a-Student
An amazing way to serve and build valuable relationships with our college and graduate students is through our Adopt-a-Student program! Volunteer to make your home a home-away-from-home for a college student in our Huron Hills Church community.

Some ways you could serve: Provide a home-cooked meal once every week, every two weeks, or every month. Take them out for coffee and conversation. Volunteer your laundry room. Get lunch together after church on Sundays.

If any of the above suggestions sound like something you could do for one of our college or grad students (or a group of them!) we would love to have you a part of Adopt-a-Student.

For more information, or to join in the fun and service, please contact Nate Veldhoff (natev@huronhills.org).

Want to Get Involved with Worship Arts?
If you sing, play an instrument, or work with tech, and are passionate about creating a space of worshipful encounter with God, we'd love to meet you! A great way to make that happen would be to join us at our next team rehearsal night on Monday, September 25 at 7pm in the church sanctuary. Our rehearsal nights are a time for everyone involved (or looking to get involved) with the Worship Team to gather, hang out, and play through a bunch of tunes together. We'd love to see you there! Questions or looking for more info? Contact Betsy King (betsy@huronhills.org) or Nate Veldhoff (natev@huronhills.org).

College Ministry Update
With the new school year, we are seeking to deepen connections between college and graduate school students at Huron Hills and our larger church family. Please consider helping us out with two exciting initiatives we are launching this fall:

  • Adopt-a-Student: Volunteer to make your home a home-away-from-home for a college student (or group of students). Meals, laundry, coffee, conversation: your can give our college students and graduate students a chance to see what life can look like after school, and understand better how to maintain a strong connection with God and His people.
  • ULunch Service: We will be hosting one extra lunch in the first month of school, and we are asking for small groups to volunteer their service in preparing and serving food on September 24 and October 8.

Weekly Update Aug 8, 2017

Prayer Focus and Prayer Event August 30
Let’s gather as one and pray for our fall kick off! As the ministry season launches we need to ask for the guidance and power of the Spirit! We will meet on Wednesday, August 30 at the Lodge from 7–8pm. Please direct questions to Myra Court (courtmyra@comcast.net) or Katie Glupker (kglupker@gmail.com).

Worship, Learn, Connect Together in August!
The Church is the unique creation of the Holy Spirit!
We have a deep sense that creating intentional spaces for all us to be together and to cultivate genuine openness to the Spirit is critical for the vision and mission of Huron Hills Church. It’s a basic feature of what church life ought to be--a community that is unified, open, responsive, and longing for the presence of The Spirit who is God.

We have to move beyond good intentions and do the work of gathering together and seeking God together. So here are three ways in August we can do that together and get ready for this next season of ministry together.

1. Worshipping As One (Gathering)
Make our 11am worship time a priority. Let’s gather in one place with a renewed sense of openness and attentiveness to the Spirit. With a readiness to engage, to sing, to pray, to listen well, to lead each other in worship, to bless God’s heart.

2. Learning as One (Listening)
We will start a 3 week series on the Holy Spirit starting August 13.

We'll explore 3 questions:
Who is the Holy Spirit?
What does the Holy Spirit do?
How can I be filled with the Holy Spirit?

This will set the stage for our fall series on Neighbors and how to live our mission out where we live and work by the power of that Spirit.

3. Becoming as One (Connecting)
9:30AM: August 13, 20, 27 we will create a space for all ages fellowship, learning, and simple prayer to cultivate deeper connections with each other, and to build new relationships. Instead of 2 identical worship services in August, we’ll be creating a fun, interactive all ages space for people to gather as one and seek the Spirit at 9:30am. PreK and Nursery program will still be offered at 9:30am.

From the Board Chair
The church has been engaged in seeking two staff members for HHC. As announced, the Church Board is pleased to welcome Kurt Heinold as the full time Community Life Director at HHC (initially posted as an associate pastor position). Throughout the month of July, Kurt will be in the Welcome Center after each service so you can meet and talk with him. In addition, Advisory Search Team members (David Baldrige, Gary Court, Julie Esch, Melodie Marske, Eric Svaan,) and Board members will be available in the Welcome Center and lobby for discussion.

Please continue to pray for our open Youth Pastor position. We initially thought that the Youth Pastor opening would be much quicker to fill. Unfortunately, it is taking much longer than anticipated. We share the sense of urgency that the volunteer youth leadership team, parents and youth have expressed about filling this important vacancy. The members of the Youth Pastor Advisory Search Team are: Chris Cristian, Cathy Galura, Marcy Hires, Michael Hoffman, and Kurtis Rosen. If you have suggestions for possible candidates, please contact any of the team members or Nathan.

 New ministry opportunity!
You are invited to a Prayer and Planning meeting for all who want to help international students and scholars at Huron Hills draw closer to God. Come to room 216A on Tuesday night, August 22 at 7:30pm. We will pray and brainstorm new ways Huron Hills can assist internationals in knowing Christ and making Him known. Contact Yuanyuan with questions (yuanyuan@hotmail.com or (734) 678-4821).

Divorce Recovery Workshop
This fall will mark the 33rd year that Divorce Recovery Workshop has been offered here at Huron Hills, and over the years hundreds of lives have been touched through this wonderful ministry. The workshop will meet on Thursday nights September 21–November 9, 7–9:30pm. HHMoms
HHMoms is an intergenerational group of moms looking for depth of relationship with each other and Christ! We’ll be kicking off our second year on Friday mornings here at Huron Hills, beginning September 8, from 9:30–11:15am in Room 216B. We spend time drinking coffee, eating delicious treats, delving deep into the Word together, and developing intentional friendships. Free childcare is provided, all ages and stages of moms are welcome to join! Please sign up at huronhills.org or on the sign up sheets at the welcome area. If you have any questions, please contact Steph Ebright at sebright2772@gmail.com and/or join our Facebook group, HHMoms.

Email Prayer Group
Want to receive prayer requests from the congregation? Sign up to join our email prayer group! If you would like to receive prayer requests by email, please send an email to Allison Zehnder at azehnder@huronhills.org asking to be added to this group. If you would like to request prayer - please send your prayer requests to Allison as well. Allison will then forward your request to the group. Questions about this? Please contact Carol Springer at carolannspringer@gmail.com.

Group Life At Huron Hills
Get connected and grow! There are groups every day of the week! Sunday Adult Bible Classes, Home Groups, Midweek Bible Studies, and you could start a group too! Check out the table in the lobby to sign up for classes and learn more! GroupLife@huronhills.org.

The Word Sunday Class—9:30am, Room 217
The Word is a class for adults focused on in-depth Bible study. We meet to savor the beauty of Scripture and seek its meaning for our present day. The current study is on Job.

Bridges Sunday Class—11:00am, Room 217
We gear the class toward international students but anyone is welcome. We are studying The Gospel of Mark. Teachers are Ryan Nelson, Rich Steiner and Peter Talbot.

A Big Thank You and Welcome!
HHKids has been so blessed by Steph Ebright, once again, stepping in as interim Coordinator overseeing nursery and preschool this summer. Her energy, dedication and know-how have been invaluable. Please be sure to say thank you when you see her (and keep a look out for a meal train when that baby girl arrives!). And we joyfully welcome Kristen Hamilton to our staff. Kristen comes with a background in children's literature and drama. She also is a paraprofessional at Ypsilanti District Library overseeing story times and events for youth. We are so excited to have her join our team (her husband Matt is our HHKids Worship Coordinator).

HHKids Volunteer Needs
Now that we will have two offerings in August, we are in need of helpers for both services in preschool/nursery, and primarily at the 11:00 for elementary. Take that step and reach out to Bianca@huronhills.org right now! You'll be blessed as a result!

HHKids Summer
The theme for the summer is Gadgets and Gizmos- we are uniquely wired and wonderfully made. This month, we take a closer look at the idea of uniqueness—discovering who God made you to be so you can make a difference. Our Memory Verse for July is Ephesians 2:10: We are God’s creation. He created us to belong to Christ Jesus. Now we can do good works. Long ago God prepared these works for us to do. (NIrV)

Preschool Summer
The theme for June and July is "Kids Rock" and the children will be hearing stories of kids in the bible (Jesus at the temple, Samuel, and David). The bottom line is "I can do what God wants me to do", and the verse is “God made us to do good works.” Ephesians 2:10, NCV.

HHKids Renovation
Be sure to check out our renovation plans in the lobby and lower level. Thanks for your flexibility this summer as we begin renewing the space for our families!

Please pray for those among us who are brokenhearted, suffering loss, lonely, anxious, frightened, lost. Ask for them to know the presence of Christ and feel safe in His arms.

  • Ÿ2 Corinthians 1:3, 4—Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.

Gym America!
Next week, August 6th, we have Gym America coming with our own Kurtis Rosen. It's a great week to bring friends! (During the 11:00 service Preschool will have regular programming, and they can come play again at 12:00.) At 9:30, elementary will be a part of the all-ages gathering with their families.

Reaching Out to Homeless Families
Four times a year HHC serves as the host congregation at Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) at Alpha House. The mission of IHN is to provide food, shelter and comprehensive services in a caring atmosphere of dignity and safety for the homeless families of Washtenaw County. The goal is to support the families in securing and maintaining their own home.

You can extend the love of Christ to these families by volunteering to provide supplies, prepare and serve meals, participate in the children’s activity time or stay overnight. Our next host week is Monday, July 17–Friday, July 21. Join hands with others at HHC to serve those in need. Look for the sign up board in the foyer of HHC or contact Margaret Gaugler for more information at mjgaugler@gmail.com. Additional information about IHN can be found on their web site at www.alphahouse-ihn.org.

Summer iZosh Micro Event
Wednesday, July 19 from 7–8pm at the Huron Hills Lodge. Please join us at an informal gathering focused on funding micro-loans for women in extreme poverty! There won't be a speaker or book discussion; this "micro" Event is all about funding loans in real time. Bring a laptop or tablet to fund loans alongside other iZōsh members. Or just bring yourself: if you can't contribute, you can still participate by spending iZōsh money—we have more than $1,300 in Kiva credit to spend!

We'll meet at the Lodge, just up the hill from Huron Hills Church. (It's close enough to park at Huron Hills and then walk.) And, true to iZōsh, there will be chocolate.

Bring a girlfriend (or three)! This is a great introduction to iZōsh for those women friends who never seem to be available on Friday nights.

Women can get more info and RSVP to the Facebook event here: https://www.facebook.com/events/835893656561083

Welcome Baby Iris!
Please join us in celebrating new HHKids staff members Matt and Kristen Hamilton's latest arrival, Iris Maria. Iris was born on May 27th. Consider blessing the family with a meal.  https://www.mealtrain.com/trains/3l6rv8 (or contact bianca@huronhills.org)

The members of the Youth Pastor Advisory Search Team are: Chris Christian, Cathy Galura, Marcy Hires, Michael Hoffman, and Kurtis Rosen. If you have suggestions for possible candidates, please contact any of the team members or Nathan.

Email Prayer Group

From the Board Chair
Good news! We have a strong candidate for the staff position that we are now calling Director of Community Life. (We had been calling it Associate Pastor.) We have changed the title to Director of Community Life because this role will include creating and implementing systems to help newcomers assimilate, equipping the people of Huron Hills in spiritual formation, and facilitating communication across the church.

Our hiring process is guided by the HHC Constitution, which states that the Lead Pastor is responsible for appointing new staff with the approval of the Church Board.  There is no congregational vote for staff appointed by the Lead Pastor.

In our search for Director of Community Life, we have an advisory team composed of David Baldridge, Gary Court, Julie Esch, Melodie Marske and Eric Svaan. Similarly, in our search for a youth pastor, we have an advisory team, which includes Chris Cristian, Cathy Galura, Marcy Hires, Michael Hoffman, Anna Mason, Kurtis Rosen, and Brian Samuel.

Please continue to pray for both advisory teams and for Pastor Nathan. May God would bring the right person to each role!

We have changed the title to Director of Community Life because this role will include creating and implementing systems to help newcomers assimilate, equipping the people of Huron Hills in spiritual formation, and facilitating communication across the church.

Shiloh (new day and time!)
The name Shiloh means "place of peace." For women experiencing the pain of infertility or loss, nothing may be more needed than peace, rest, support, and understanding. Join us on the last Wednesday of each month at 7pm in Room 117 on the lower level. The lower level doors will be unlocked, and you will be greeted with tea, snacks, and a place of peace.  bianca@huronhills.org

  • The Word Sunday Class—9:30am, Room 217
The Word is a class for adults focused on in-depth Bible study. We meet to savor the beauty of Scripture and seek its meaning for our present day. The current study is on Job.
  • Bridges Sunday Class—11:00am, Room 217
We gear the class toward international students but anyone is welcome. We are studying The Gospel of Mark. Teachers are Ryan Nelson, Rich Steiner and Peter Talbot.

Highly Caffeinated Church
We're a church that enjoys our coffee and tea! Our amazing Coffee Team can always use additional volunteers to help prepare coffee, which—let's face it—goes a long way towards getting people ready to worship in the morning! Contact Jane Talbot to get involved (jane.m.talbot@gmail.com).

We also use ceramic mugs for our beverages in an effort to reject the "single use" mentality that is doing harm to God's created world. We encourage you to bring your own favorite mug or tumbler when you come on Sundays. If you forget - no problem. Feel free to use one of our logo mugs and leave it here to be washed.

HHKids Summer
The theme for the summer is Gadgets and Gizmos- we are uniquely wired and wonderfully made. We will be exploring the theme of creativity: imagining what you could do because you're made in God's image. Our Memory Verse for June comes from Psalm 139:14. How you made me is amazing and wonderful. I praise you for that (NIrV).

Weekly Update Jun 8, 2018

Prayer Focus

May the people of Huron Hills, in the midst of chaos, confusion, and terror in the world strive for peace in our homes, our neighborhoods and in our hearts.
Philippians 4:7
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
"O Lord, awaken the consciousness of all people's and their leaders; raise up men and women full of love and generosity who can speak and act for peace, and show us new ways in which hatred can be left behind, wounds can be healed, and unity can be restored."

From the Board Chair
Carole Metzger showed us a clip from an Egyptian newscast about how the Coptic Christians in Egypt were openly praying for and forgiving the terrorists who bombed their churches and killed 45 people at Easter time. The power of forgiveness completely overwhelmed the national broadcaster and he said that the Christians’ forgiveness was something that he could not do. He is correct.  We cannot forgive, but Christ in us can. The power of forgiveness transforms us and helps us understand the profound love the Lord has for each one of us.   Chris Tomlin’s song lyrics ring true:

I'm forgiven because you were forsaken
I'm accepted, you were condemned
I'm alive and well
Your spirit is within me
Because you died and rose again

Amazing love, how can it be?
That you, my king. would die for me
Amazing love, I know it's true
Its my joy to honor you
Amazing love how can it be?
That my king would die for me
Amazing love I know it's true
It’s my joy to honor you
In all I do
I honor you
