From the Board Chair
Good news! We have a strong candidate for the staff position that we are now calling Director of Community Life. (We had been calling it Associate Pastor.) We have changed the title to Director of Community Life because this role will include creating and implementing systems to help newcomers assimilate, equipping the people of Huron Hills in spiritual formation, and facilitating communication across the church.

Our hiring process is guided by the HHC Constitution, which states that the Lead Pastor is responsible for appointing new staff with the approval of the Church Board.  There is no congregational vote for staff appointed by the Lead Pastor.

In our search for Director of Community Life, we have an advisory team composed of David Baldridge, Gary Court, Julie Esch, Melodie Marske and Eric Svaan. Similarly, in our search for a youth pastor, we have an advisory team, which includes Chris Cristian, Cathy Galura, Marcy Hires, Michael Hoffman, Anna Mason, Kurtis Rosen, and Brian Samuel.

Please continue to pray for both advisory teams and for Pastor Nathan. May God would bring the right person to each role!

We gear the class toward international students but anyone is welcome. We are studying The Gospel of Mark. Teachers are Ryan Nelson, Rich Steiner and Peter Talbot.

Highly Caffeinated Church
We're a church that enjoys our coffee and tea! Our amazing Coffee Team can always use additional volunteers to help prepare coffee, which—let's face it—goes a long way towards getting people ready to worship in the morning! Contact Jane Talbot to get involved (jane.m.talbot@gmail.com).

We also use ceramic mugs for our beverages in an effort to reject the "single use" mentality that is doing harm to God's created world. We encourage you to bring your own favorite mug or tumbler when you come on Sundays. If you forget - no problem. Feel free to use one of our logo mugs and leave it here to be washed.

Prayer Focus

May the people of Huron Hills, in the midst of chaos, confusion, and terror in the world strive for peace in our homes, our neighborhoods and in our hearts.
Philippians 4:7
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
"O Lord, awaken the consciousness of all people's and their leaders; raise up men and women full of love and generosity who can speak and act for peace, and show us new ways in which hatred can be left behind, wounds can be healed, and unity can be restored."

From the Board Chair
Carole Metzger showed us a clip from an Egyptian newscast about how the Coptic Christians in Egypt were openly praying for and forgiving the terrorists who bombed their churches and killed 45 people at Easter time. The power of forgiveness completely overwhelmed the national broadcaster and he said that the Christians’ forgiveness was something that he could not do. He is correct.  We cannot forgive, but Christ in us can. The power of forgiveness transforms us and helps us understand the profound love the Lord has for each one of us.   Chris Tomlin’s song lyrics ring true:

I'm forgiven because you were forsaken
I'm accepted, you were condemned
I'm alive and well
Your spirit is within me
Because you died and rose again

Amazing love, how can it be?
That you, my king. would die for me
Amazing love, I know it's true
Its my joy to honor you
Amazing love how can it be?
That my king would die for me
Amazing love I know it's true
It’s my joy to honor you

I honor you

Prayer Focus
May the people of Huron Hills, in the midst of chaos, confusion, and terror in the world strive for peace in our homes, our neighborhoods and in our hearts.
ŸPhilippians 4:7
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

"O Lord, awaken the consciousness of all people's and their leaders; raise up men and women full of love and generosity who can speak and act for peace, and show us new ways in which hatred can be left behind, wounds can be healed, and unity can be restored."
~Henri Nouwen (A Cry for Mercy)

From the Board Chair
Carole Metzger showed us a clip from an Egyptian newscast about how the Coptic Christians in Egypt were openly praying for and forgiving the terrorists who bombed their churches and killed 45 people at Easter time. The power of forgiveness completely overwhelmed the national broadcaster and he said that the Christians’ forgiveness was something that he could not do. He is correct.  We cannot forgive, but Christ in us can. The power of forgiveness transforms us and helps us understand the profound love the Lord has for each one of us.   Chris Tomlin’s song lyrics ring true:

I'm forgiven because you were forsaken
I'm accepted, you were condemned
I'm alive and well
Your spirit is within me
Because you died and rose again

Amazing love, how can it be?
That you, my king. would die for me
Amazing love, I know it's true
Its my joy to honor you
Amazing love how can it be?
That my king would die for me
Amazing love I know it's true
It’s my joy to honor you
In all I do
I honor you

Weekly Update May 18, 2017

Prayer Focus
Pray that Huron Hills Church will grasp a deeper understanding of what devotion to Jesus looks like. Pray that we will put our faith into action. Pray that we will devote ourselves to God's Word, fellowship, and generosity. With gratitude, let's offer up to God hearts of thanksgiving and praise for what he has given us.
ŸEphesians 1: 17–21
I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength 20 he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.

Celebration Sunday! Volunteers & Bethania Kids! (May 21)
We are the Body of Christ! Together we are the ministers who serve God and join his mission! Let's celebrate the power of God working in us and through us! Our impact here and around the world couldn't happen without the faithful obedience and humble service of our volunteers! We'll honor their work, thank God for the gifts to Bethania Kids, and hear from David Granner, Co-founder of Bethania Kids! Ice cream treats for everyone after each gathering too!

Memorial Day Weekend Worship Schedule (May 27–28)
May 27, No Saturday Worship Gathering!
May 28, 11am WORSHIP ONLY! Infant Nursery Only! No HH Kids Program!

Board Connection
This Sunday (May 21) is a "Meet the Board" day! Come visit the small table in the lobby to ask questions or chat with a couple of Board members. From the Board Chair

  • The following is an excerpt from an article from Tabletalk, a devotional magazine from the Ligonier Ministries. I wish I had read this 26 years ago!
    A Parent’s Delight—by Jason Helopoulos
“The most necessary thing as a Christian parent is the Christian’s parent’s own life in Christ. That may seem simplistic, but it is fundamental. As Christian parents, our own lives need to be marked by godliness. Godliness manifests itself in various ways, but one of the chief ways is a love of God’s Word. It is the blessed child who is raised by parents who know and treasure Christ according to His Word. A godly mother or father steeped in God’s truth is an effective instrument in the hands of God.

For starters, we can only share what we possess. Christian parents who know little of Christ will have little of Christ to share with their children. Christian parents who delight little in Christ will instill little delight in their children.  Christian parents who speak little of Christ will have children who speak little of Christ. Our children are sponges; their little souls are inclined to soak up what floods forth from our lives. As we delight in Christ’s Word and manifest that delight to our children, they take note.”

  • Matthew 28:16–20—One post-resurrection account:
Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw Him they worshipped Him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.”

Weekly Update May 5, 2017

That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.

Serve Our City 2017 (May 6, Projects Start at 12:30pm. Celebration Cookout 5pm)
Do you want to make a difference? Do you want to connect with our mission? Let's bless our community! Join us as we do a ministry experiment at Huron Hills! This year we will suspend the Annual Garage Sale, and connect with our community in a different and powerful way. We're assembling teams of people from Huron Hills for a day of service projects at 4 different sites: Mitchell Elementary, C.A.N. Green-Baxter Court, Huron High School, and our own HH Kids entrance area. Clean up, beautification, prayer walks, collaboration and connection with Green-Baxter residents, and other improvements will communicate in practical ways a love for our city, people far from God, and help continue our practice of training in servant leadership our HH Youth Mexico Team! As the day ends, our church family will gather for a celebration cookout at 5pm!

Serve Our City: Prayer Walkers Needed!
One of the ways we're going to serve our city on May 6 is by prayer walking through the neighborhoods right next to our church. We'll provide the map and the prayer prompts that day, if you provide your movement and heart for God! We'd like to have people leave the church every half hour from 12:30 to 3:00pm, and the route will take 1.5–2 hours to walk if you choose to do the whole thing. We want to make sure we have the afternoon covered, so please sign up at the Serve Our City table on the sheet specifically for prayer walking.

Memorial Day Weekend
On Saturday, May 27, we will not have Saturday evening worship.
On Sunday, May 28, we will have worship at 11am only. There will not be HHKids programming. We will offer infant nursery only.

Special Easter Offering (Ends 5.19)
Bethania Kids!

500 million kids live in India. Over 35 million are orphans. Begun in 1987, Bethania Kids seeks out children in need and serves them in orphan homes, day care centers, rehab centers for kids with physical and mental disabilities, and women's empowerment centers that give basic vocational training and support to families in need. Led by Indian believers, 1000 kids are reached with the love of Jesus. Be a part of our 6 week offering to launch this new partnership! You can also give online at huronhills.org.

We have an urgent need for folks to hold babies, check families in, or be on our sub list—Can you help? We have a great time and our families and HHKids are awesome! (all volunteers background checked) Contact Bianca@huronhills.org.

Thank You!
Let’s Give a Hand to the 38 pair of hands that volunteered to serve the homeless families at Interfaith Hospitality Network this past week. These hands from HHC served meals, provided childcare, companionship and overnight support to the families at IHN’s Alpha House. Many other hands generously supplied items for the IHN food pantry and supply closet. Thanks to all. Your expression of Christ’s love for those in need is greatly appreciated by the IHN families and staff. Join hands with us to serve during our next host weeks on July 17–21 and September 25–29.  Contact Margaret Gaugler for more information at mjgaugler@gmail.com.

Board Connection
At the last Board meeting, new officers were elected. Gary Court will remain the Chair for this year, Carole Metzger is the new Vice Chair, and Sara Samuel is the new Secretary. Thank you for praying for the new Board!

Baby Dedication May 14
On Mother’s Day we will provide an opportunity for baby dedications. If you would like to be a part of this service, contact our HHKids & Family Minister, Bianca Humphries. bianca@huronhills.org.

From the Board Chair

  • Please pray:
Serve our City—Saturday, May 6 is rapidly approaching. It is a time for all of us to pitch in, demonstrate a life of service, make friends, and enjoy living missionally in our community. The day will end with a meal at 5 pm, which will be a lot of fun. There is a way for everyone to contribute—prayer walks, beautification, car wash, gardening....

  • How exciting to be resurrection people! We had an amazing time last week to worship and learn more about the astounding truth of God’s power to conquer both sin and death. There is no greater message of hope that exists. Everything pales in comparison. A big thank you to Betsy, Nathan, Bianca and HHC team members for 4 straight days of impactful services leading up to Easter Day.

Staff Changes in HHKids
We say goodbye to Joanne Beckwith, our HHKids Coordinator, who has done a wonderful job this year managing our preschool side on top of working toward her PhD in chemical engineering. We couldn't have done the year without her! Thank you, Joanne! Steph Ebright will once again step up for the summer as our interim coordinator—we're looking forward to a great summer in HHKids.

May in First Look
This month we invite all our preschoolers to "Come to the Castle" and hear stories from the King! We will be learning that God is always us and teaches us the way to go. The memory verse for the month is Deuteronomy 10:17 - “He is the great God, the mighty and awesome God.”

This month we will discover more about humility–putting others first by giving up what you think you deserve. Our Memory Verse for April comes from Philippians 2:3.Don’t do anything only to get ahead. Don’t do it because you are proud. Instead, be humble. Value others more than yourselves. (NIrV). As we respond to Jesus’ love, we can show humility as we love on those around us.

This month, our preschoolers will be learning that Jesus is #1! Our memory verse is John 13:16 - “God loved the world so much that He gave His only Son.” (GNT)

Weekly Update Apr 20, 2017

Prayer Focus
Pray that the people of Huron Hills will live the Resurrection Life.

  • ŸRomans 10:9–10—If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.
  • Ÿ1 Peter 1:18–21—For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.
Lord Jesus, we rejoice that the darkness and sorrow of the cross are turned into the defeat of sin and death. Thank you for life through faith in your name. Amen.

Reaching Out to Homeless Families
Monday, May 1–Friday, May 5
Four times a year HHC serves as the host congregation at Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) at Alpha House. The mission of IHN is to provide food, shelter and comprehensive services for homeless families. The goal is to support the families in securing and maintaining their own home. You can extend the love of Christ to these families by volunteering to provide supplies, prepare and serve meals, participate in the children’s activity time or stay overnight. Sign up in the lobby or contact Margaret Gaugler for more information at mjgaugler@gmail.com. Additional information can be found at www.alphahouse-ihn.org.

Board Connection
At the last Board meeting, new officers were elected. Gary Court will remain the Chair for this year, Carole Metzger is the new Vice Chair, and Sara Samuel is the new Secretary. Please pray for the new Board.
Also, this Sunday (April 23) is a "Meet the Board" day! Come visit the small table in the lobby to ask questions or chat with a couple of Board members. The table will be staffed between services and after second service. If you can't stop by in person, we're always available via email at churchboard@huronhills.org.

Baby Dedication May 14
On Mother’s Day we will provide an opportunity for baby dedications. If you would like to be a part of this service, contact our HHKids & Family Minister, Bianca Humphries. bianca@huronhills.org.

From the Board Chair

  • Serve our City—Saturday, May 6 is rapidly approaching. It is a time for all of us to pitch in, demonstrate a life of service, make friends, and enjoy living missionally in our community. The day will end with a meal at 5 pm, which will be a lot of fun. There is a way for everyone to contribute—prayer walks, beautification, car wash, gardening....

The name Shiloh means "place of peace." For women experiencing the pain of infertility or loss, nothing may be more needed than peace, rest, support, and understanding. Join us on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30pm in Room 117 on the lower level. The lower level doors will be unlocked, and you will be greeted with tea, snacks, and a place of peace.  bianca@huronhills.org

More info coming soon!

Women's Bible Study
Join a group of women who love studying God's Word every Thursday morning at 9:45am in Room 217. Childcare is not provided. For any questions, please contact Dena Cooperwasser at denacooperwasser@gmail.com.

April in HHKids Elementary
This month we will discover more about humility–putting others first by giving up what you think you deserve. Our Memory Verse for April comes from Philippians 2:3.Don’t do anything only to get ahead. Don’t do it because you are proud. Instead, be humble. Value others more than yourselves. (NIrV). As we respond to Jesus’ love, we can show humility as we love on those around us.

April in First Look
This month, our preschoolers will be learning that Jesus is #1! Our memory verse is John 13:16 - “God loved the world so much that He gave His only Son.” (GNT)
